Chiropractic treatment, including spinal manipulation or adjustment, has been reported to be an effective treatment for spinal, neck and pelvic pain, some headaches and other symptoms.
The risk of complications from Chiropractic care in most cases is lower than the risks associated with many medical and other treatments.
The aim of the treatment is always to improve your health. However, before undergoing any treatment you should understand the relevant factors in relation to that treatment.
- In a minority of cases, treatment may be unsuccessful and you may have no change in my condition.
- Rarely, the treatment may make your condition worse:
- In the case of treatment to the spine and pelvis, temporary soreness commonly occurs in about 1 in 3 patients; strains, sprains and rupture to muscles, tendons and ligaments may occur but are uncommon; rupture to discs between the spinal vertebrae are uncommon but in these cases, nerve pain can ensue with radiation of pain into the arms, body or legs. In rare instances, this can cause permanent pain and weakness in an arm or leg, and in very rare instances bowel, bladder and erectile function can be impaired.
- In very rare circumstances, some treatments of the neck have been reported to cause stroke or related symptoms (current statistics eg. 1 in 5.185 million – Haldemann, Principles and Practice of Chiropractic 2nd ed.). For some patients – especially those with a bone-weakening disease – a fracture of a bone is rare but possible.
