When You Need More Than Just a Massage
Sometimes your body isn’t injured.
Nothing is particularly wrong.
You’re just… done.
Your shoulders are somewhere near your ears.
Your jaw hasn’t properly unclenched since Wednesday.
Your brain has seventeen tabs open.
And even when you finally stop moving, some part of you is still quietly going:
WHAT’S NEXT?
Deep Relaxation Massage at The Urban Alchemist is designed for exactly this kind of moment.
It’s slow, nurturing, deeply restorative bodywork combining beautiful flowing massage with therapeutic techniques and, depending on your practitioner and preferences, elements drawn from modalities such as Lomi Lomi, Ka Huna, Reiki and energy work.
The intention isn’t simply to work on tight muscles.
It’s to create an experience in which your whole body has permission to soften.
Is Deep Relaxation Massage Right for You?
You might love Deep Relaxation Massage if:
- You feel stressed, depleted or overwhelmed
- Your whole body feels tight rather than one particular area
- You find it difficult to properly switch off
- You want massage to feel nurturing as well as therapeutic
- You carry tension through your shoulders, neck or jaw
- You feel like you’ve been running on adrenaline for far too long
- You want to feel grounded and back in your body
- You enjoy slower, flowing styles of massage
- You’re drawn to intuitive or energetic bodywork
- You want someone to work with your body rather than simply attacking your knots
- You want to leave feeling deeply rested rather than like you’ve survived something
You don’t need to arrive with a diagnosis.
You don’t even need to have a particularly good explanation for why you’re exhausted.
Sometimes:
“I desperately need a massage.”
is a perfectly adequate clinical history.

What Is Deep Relaxation Massage?
Deep Relaxation Massage sits somewhere beautiful between therapeutic massage and deeply nurturing bodywork.
Rather than following one rigid massage sequence, your practitioner draws from their own training and experience to create a treatment around what your body seems to need that day.
That may include elements of:
- Swedish massage
- Flowing relaxation massage
- Deep tissue techniques
- Remedial techniques
- Lomi Lomi
- Ka Huna
- Gentle stretching or movement
- Hot stones
- Reiki or energy work
- Stillness and grounding touch
Not every practitioner uses every technique.
And not every body needs the same thing.
One day you may want more attention through tight shoulders and hips.
Another day, the last thing your system wants is someone vigorously locating every knot you’ve ever owned.
Deep Relaxation Massage leaves room for both.
A Massage That Works With the Whole Body
One of the things that makes this treatment different is its sense of continuity.
Rather than experiencing your body as a collection of individual sore bits, Deep Relaxation Massage works more globally.
Long, connected movements can travel across larger areas of the body.
Your practitioner may move gradually from the back into the shoulders, arms, legs, neck, scalp or feet, creating a treatment that feels integrated rather than fragmented.
There is something particularly lovely about that when you’ve spent all week living entirely from the neck up.
Sometimes the first thing you notice isn’t:
“My trapezius feels 23% better.”
It’s:
“Oh. There I am.”
What Does Deep Relaxation Massage Feel Like?
Warm.
Slow.
Flowing.
Grounding.
Sometimes surprisingly profound.
You may notice:
- Muscles gradually softening
- Your breathing becoming slower or deeper
- Your jaw unclenching
- A sense of heaviness
- Warmth moving through the body
- Your thoughts becoming quieter
- Areas of tension becoming more noticeable and then beginning to ease
- A feeling of being more present in your body
- Deep sleepiness
- Emotional softening
- That strange and wonderful moment where you’re no longer entirely sure whether you’re awake
Some people talk throughout their massage.
Others manage approximately three sentences before disappearing somewhere delightful.
Both are welcome.
Deep Relaxation Massage for Stress and Overwhelm
Stress and anxiety don’t exist exclusively inside your thoughts.
They can show up physically too.
You may notice yourself:
- Holding your breath
- Clenching your jaw
- Tightening your shoulders
- Sleeping restlessly
- Feeling physically restless even when you’re exhausted
- Finding it difficult to settle
- Feeling permanently “on”
- Carrying muscular tension without even noticing you’re doing it
Massage doesn’t make the circumstances causing stress magically disappear.
Unfortunately, your therapist cannot massage your inbox, mortgage or mother-in-law.
But therapeutic touch, warmth, stillness and an hour in which absolutely nothing is required of you can provide a powerful interruption to the constant state of doing.
For some people, that experience of finally dropping their guard is exactly what they need.
Deep Relaxation Massage and the Nervous System
You’ll often hear people describe a beautiful massage by saying:
“My whole nervous system needed that.”
We understand exactly what they mean.
Touch, safety, comfort, breathing, environment and human connection can all influence how settled or activated we feel.
During a Deep Relaxation Massage, many people notice their breathing slow, muscles soften and attention gradually shift away from whatever has been occupying their mind.
Some describe feeling grounded.
Others feel lighter.
Others simply become extremely sleepy.
We don’t need to claim we’re pressing a secret nervous-system reset button.
But helping create the conditions in which someone feels safe enough to soften can be valuable in its own right.
Deep Relaxation Massage for Muscular Tension
Deep relaxation doesn’t mean your muscles are ignored.
Quite the opposite.
Your practitioner can still spend time working with areas that feel:
- Tight
- Tired
- Achy
- Overworked
- Stiff
- Guarded
The difference is in the intention and pacing.
Rather than spending the entire appointment chasing knots, your practitioner can combine more focused muscular work with broader, flowing treatment.
This makes Deep Relaxation Massage particularly lovely when you have muscular tension but don’t necessarily want a highly clinical treatment.
If you have a specific injury or persistent musculoskeletal problem requiring detailed assessment, Remedial Massage or Myotherapy may be a better fit.

Does Deep Relaxation Massage Have to Be Gentle?
No.
Relaxing doesn’t necessarily mean feather-light.
Some people find light massage relaxing.
Others need firmer, slower pressure before their muscles finally go:
FINE. WE’LL STOP HOLDING EVERYTHING.
Your practitioner can adapt pressure according to your preferences and what feels appropriate.
The important distinction is that pressure shouldn’t become something you’re enduring.
If you’re holding your breath, clenching the table and waiting for it to end, we’re probably moving in the wrong direction.
The Intuitive Side of Deep Relaxation Massage
Not every part of a beautiful massage can be reduced to a sequence.
Experienced bodyworkers develop an extraordinary sensitivity through their hands.
They notice when tissue feels guarded.
When breathing changes.
When an area seems to soften.
When your body welcomes more pressure.
And when it very clearly doesn’t.
At The Urban Alchemist, some of our Deep Relaxation Massage practitioners work quite intuitively.
That doesn’t mean they abandon anatomy or professional boundaries.
It means they are paying attention.
Rather than performing exactly the same massage on every body that walks through the door, they respond to the person in front of them.
Sometimes that is the difference between a massage that is technically good and one where you get off the table thinking:
What just happened to me?
In the best possible way.
Energy Work and Deep Relaxation Massage
Depending on the practitioner you choose, your massage may incorporate elements of Reiki, energetic bodywork or grounding touch.
For some people, this is an important part of the experience.
They may describe feeling:
- Grounded
- Clearer
- More spacious
- Emotionally lighter
- Deeply settled
- Reconnected with themselves
- As though something has shifted
These are subjective experiences, and we think that’s okay.
Not every meaningful experience needs to look identical from one person to another.
If energy work isn’t your thing, that’s also completely fine.
Tell us what you’re comfortable with and your treatment can remain entirely focused on massage and physical bodywork.

Deep Relaxation Massage and Emotional Release
Occasionally people become emotional during massage.
Sometimes there is an obvious reason.
Sometimes there isn’t.
A person may suddenly feel teary when their shoulders soften.
They may notice sadness, relief or an unexpected sense of vulnerability.
Or they may simply feel enormously grateful to be lying somewhere warm while nobody needs anything from them.
Physical and emotional experience aren’t completely separate.
We don’t need to decide that every tight muscle contains a hidden emotion waiting to escape.
But neither do we need to pretend that touch, safety, rest and being cared for can’t affect us emotionally.
If something arises during your treatment, there is space for that.
No explanation required.
Lomi Lomi and Ka Huna Influences
Some of our practitioners incorporate techniques inspired by Lomi Lomi and Ka Huna massage.
These Hawaiian bodywork traditions are known for their long, rhythmic and flowing movements.
Rather than working on one small area at a time, strokes may travel across larger areas of the body, creating a sense of continuity and flow.
For people accustomed to more conventional massage, this can feel completely different.
Less:
Here is your left shoulder. We shall now work on your left shoulder.
More:
Ohhhhhhh. My body is actually one whole thing.

Add Hot Stones to Your Massage
If you’d like to take relaxation another notch deeper, ask whether Hot Stone Massage can be incorporated into your appointment.
Smooth heated stones can be used as part of the treatment to introduce warmth and help muscles feel comfortable under the practitioner’s hands.
And frankly, on a cold Melbourne day, having warm stones placed on your body while you lie somewhere cosy is one of civilisation’s better ideas.
Deep Relaxation Massage FAQs
What Happens During Your Appointment?
Your practitioner will begin by asking what you’d like from the session.
Perhaps you want:
- Pure relaxation
- Firmer massage with a relaxing feel
- Extra attention around your shoulders
- Lots of scalp work
- Gentle treatment because you’re feeling sensitive
- Hot stones
- Energy work
- No energy work
- To talk
- To absolutely not talk to another human being unless the building is on fire
All useful information.
Your practitioner will adapt the session around your preferences, their training and what they notice during treatment.
What Should I Wear?
You’ll undress only to your level of comfort.
Professional draping is used throughout the massage, and only the area being treated is uncovered.
Your practitioner will explain anything you need to know before beginning.
You can also ask for an area to be avoided at any point.
Will My Therapist Massage My Feet?
Probably, but if you’d like a massage focused on your feet and lower legs, you might consider booking a reflexology session instead.
Do I Have to Talk During My Massage?
Absolutely not.
Some people love chatting with their massage therapist.
Some people would rather spend the entire hour hovering approximately three centimetres above consciousness.
This appointment belongs to you.
If quiet is what you need, quiet is completely welcome.
What About Consent?
Always.
A relaxing treatment should feel safe and collaborative.
You can:
- Ask for more or less pressure
- Ask questions
- Request that an area be avoided
- Decline a technique
- Decline energy work
- Change position
- Ask for more warmth
- Ask to stop treatment at any time
Your therapist may be intuitive.
They are not psychic.
Please tell them what you need.
Deep Relaxation Massage vs Remedial Massage
The biggest difference is usually what you’re coming for.
Remedial Massage is generally more appropriate when you have a particular muscular problem, injury or area of pain you want assessed and treated.
Deep Relaxation Massage is generally more appropriate when the priority is:
I want my whole body to let go.
There can absolutely be therapeutic muscular work within a Deep Relaxation Massage.
The treatment simply isn’t organised around fixing a particular injury.
Deep Relaxation Massage vs Sports Massage
Sports Massage is generally focused around active bodies, training, muscular recovery and sport-related tension.
Deep Relaxation Massage is much less interested in what your hamstrings are doing at kilometre 17.
It’s interested in whether you can stop doing for an hour.
Deep Relaxation Massage vs Lomi Lomi
Lomi Lomi is a specific bodywork tradition with its own style, philosophy and flowing techniques.
Deep Relaxation Massage may incorporate elements of Lomi Lomi, but it isn’t limited to that modality.
Your practitioner may draw from several massage and bodywork traditions to create the session.
Is Deep Relaxation Massage Suitable During Burnout?
If you’re experiencing burnout, massage may provide a valuable space for rest, physical comfort and reconnection with your body.
It isn’t a treatment for the underlying workplace or life circumstances driving burnout.
But when you’ve spent months functioning on fumes, an hour of genuine rest can still matter.

Is Deep Relaxation Massage Good for Sleep?
Some people find they sleep beautifully after massage.
Others simply notice that they feel calmer or more physically settled.
We wouldn’t promise that massage treats insomnia, because sleep problems can have many causes.
But if you’ve ever had to be gently awakened at the end of a massage, you’ll understand why relaxation massage and sleep have developed quite a close friendship.
How Often Should I Have a Deep Relaxation Massage?
There is no required schedule.
Some people book when their body starts sending increasingly unsubtle messages that it’s time.
Others enjoy massage regularly as part of how they care for themselves.
Weekly.
Monthly.
Every few months.
Whenever life gets ridiculous.
There is no magic number.
Is Deep Relaxation Massage the same as relaxation massage?
It’s related, but our Deep Relaxation Massage can draw from a broader range of bodywork techniques.
Depending on your practitioner, that may include flowing massage, firmer muscular work, Lomi Lomi, Ka Huna, hot stones, Reiki or energetic techniques.
The emphasis remains on creating a deeply restorative experience.
We have a whole page dedicated to different types of massage should you wish to compare.
Is Deep Relaxation Massage deep tissue massage?
Not necessarily.
“Deep Relaxation” refers to the state we’re hoping to create, not how far someone’s elbow travels into your glute.
Pressure can range from gentle to firm depending on your preference.
Can I ask for firm pressure?
Absolutely.
Firm massage can still be slow, thoughtful and relaxing.
Tell your practitioner what you enjoy.
Can I ask for very gentle pressure?
Also absolutely.
Your massage should be adapted to you.
Does it include Reiki?
Some practitioners may incorporate Reiki or other energy work.
If you’d like this, let us know when choosing your practitioner.
If you don’t want energy work, that’s completely fine too.
Can I add Hot Stones?
Depending on the practitioner and appointment type, Hot Stone Massage may be available as part of your treatment.
Check when booking or contact reception on (03) 9347 9247.
Should I book 60 or 90 minutes?
Sixty minutes gives you a beautiful full treatment.
Ninety minutes gives your practitioner more time to slow everything down, work with the whole body and spend longer on areas needing extra attention.
If your primary goal is deep relaxation and you have the time, 90 minutes is rather lovely.
Can I claim Deep Relaxation Massage on private health insurance?
It depends on the practitioner providing the treatment, how the service is classified and your individual extras policy.
Contact your insurer if you’re relying on a rebate.
What if I fall asleep?
Excellent.
We’ll wake you up.
Eventually.
Do I need to have something wrong with me?
No.
This may be the most important FAQ on the page.
You are allowed to receive bodywork because it feels wonderful.
Rest does not need to be earned by first developing an injury.
