Neck and Head Massage in Carlton North, Melbourne
When Your Brain Needs Someone to Turn the Volume Down
There are some massages that make you think:
Oh yes, that’s helping my shoulder.
And then there is head massage.
The kind where somebody gets their fingers into your scalp and approximately fourteen seconds later you forget what you were worried about.
Our Neck and Head Massage at The Urban Alchemist is a deeply relaxing treatment focused on the scalp, head, neck and shoulders.
It may incorporate warm oils, slow rhythmic massage, gentle pressure and techniques influenced by Ayurvedic head massage traditions.
It’s ideal when your head feels full, your neck feels tight, your shoulders have crept upwards and you’re craving something that feels less like “treatment” and more like:
Please make me into a puddle.
We can do that.
Is Neck and Head Massage Right for You?
You may particularly love this treatment if you:
- Carry tension through your neck and shoulders
- Clench your jaw or tighten your face when stressed
- Spend far too much time at a computer
- Feel mentally overloaded
- Find scalp massage ridiculously relaxing
- Experience muscular tension around the temples or base of the skull
- Want a massage without having your whole body treated
- Love warm oil and slow, nurturing touch
- Want something deeply calming
- Feel as though your brain has been switched on for approximately seventeen consecutive days
You don’t need to be injured.
You don’t need a diagnosis.
And you definitely don’t need to justify wanting someone to massage your head for an hour.

What Is Neck and Head Massage?
Neck and Head Massage is concentrated bodywork for some of the areas where we humans seem particularly talented at accumulating tension.
The scalp.
Temples.
Base of the skull.
Neck.
Shoulders.
And sometimes the upper back and face.
Depending on your practitioner, the treatment may include:
- Scalp massage
- Neck massage
- Shoulder massage
- Massage around the base of the skull
- Temple and facial massage
- Gentle stretching
- Pressure-point techniques
- Warm oils
- Aromatic oils
- Slow rhythmic massage
- Ayurvedic-inspired techniques
The treatment is tailored to what feels good and what your body seems to need that day.
Why Does Head Massage Feel SO Good?
There is something almost unfairly pleasurable about having your scalp massaged.
The scalp contains a dense network of sensory nerves and blood vessels, and touch around the head, face and neck can feel incredibly soothing.
Add warmth.
Slow repetitive movements.
A comfortable treatment table.
Someone else doing absolutely everything.
And suddenly the day’s problems become significantly less urgent.
Many people notice themselves becoming deeply relaxed very quickly.
Their breathing slows.
The jaw softens.
Shoulders drop.
Thoughts become less insistent.
And somewhere along the way:
Ohhhh. That’s the spot.
What Does Neck and Head Massage Feel Like?
Most people experience a combination of:
- Warmth
- Gentle pressure
- Rhythmic scalp massage
- Slow kneading through the neck and shoulders
- Release through tight or tired muscles
- Deep relaxation
- Sleepiness
- A pleasantly heavy feeling through the body
- A quieter mind
- That glorious halfway-awake, halfway-asleep state
Some people talk.
Others stop forming complete sentences almost immediately.
We support both journeys.
Neck and Head Massage for Stress and Overwhelm
Stress can be astonishingly physical.
You may notice yourself:
- Clenching your jaw
- Frowning
- Holding your breath
- Tightening your scalp
- Elevating your shoulders
- Bracing around your neck
- Staring at a screen for six hours without moving anything except your index finger
Massage doesn’t remove the source of stress.
Your therapist cannot renegotiate your deadline, answer your emails or make your family less annoying.
But touch, warmth, stillness and having absolutely nothing required of you for an hour can give your body an opportunity to settle.
Sometimes that’s exactly what you need.

Neck and Head Massage and the Nervous System
People often say after head massage:
“My whole nervous system needed that.”
It’s a lovely description of the subjective experience.
Gentle touch, rhythm, warmth, breathing and feeling safe enough to stop can all influence how settled we feel.
During treatment, you may notice your breathing changing, muscles softening or your attention moving away from whatever has been occupying your mind.
We don’t need to promise that massage “resets” your nervous system.
But helping someone feel profoundly calm in their own body is valuable enough.
Neck and Shoulder Tension
The neck and shoulders are frequent participants in the stress Olympics.
Long periods at a desk.
Driving.
Working with your hands.
Phone use.
Exercise.
Stress.
Clenching.
General human existence.
All can be accompanied by muscular tension through the neck and shoulders.
Your practitioner may spend part of the session working more specifically through these areas before returning to slower scalp and head massage.
If persistent neck pain is your main problem, rather than relaxation, you may be better suited to a more assessment-based service such as Myotherapy or Chiropractic.

Neck and Head Massage for Headaches
Some headaches occur alongside muscular tension through the neck, shoulders, scalp or temples.
For those people, massage around these regions can feel soothing and may help reduce some of the associated muscular tension.
Research into massage for headaches is still mixed, so we wouldn’t promise that head massage will treat every headache or migraine.
Migraine in particular is a neurological condition rather than simply a tight head.
If headaches are recurrent, severe, new or changing, they deserve appropriate assessment.

Massage Around the Base of the Skull
If you’ve ever had someone gently work around the little muscles where your head meets your neck and thought:
Sweet merciful heavens.
You’re not alone.
The small muscles and soft tissues around the upper neck can become sensitive or tense, particularly when you’ve been sitting, concentrating, clenching or holding your head in one position for prolonged periods.
Slow massage around this area can feel extraordinarily good.
Your practitioner can adjust the pressure according to your comfort.
More pressure is not automatically better.
Sometimes the magic is in going slower.
Scalp Massage
Scalp massage is often the star of this treatment.
Your practitioner may use fingertips, broad hand contact and gentle rhythmic movements across different areas of the scalp.
Some people prefer quite firm scalp massage.
Others want something slower and gentler.
Tell us.
There is an enormous difference between:
“Please really get in there.”
and:
“If you tangle my hair I will cry.”
Both are important clinical information.
Ayurvedic-Inspired Head Massage
Some Neck and Head Massage treatments draw inspiration from Ayurvedic head massage traditions.
Ayurveda is a traditional system of health that originated in India and includes practices involving massage, oils, diet, lifestyle and other approaches to wellbeing.
Head massage traditions within Ayurveda may involve rhythmic massage of the scalp, neck, shoulders and sometimes the face, often using oils.
At The Urban Alchemist, our treatment may borrow from these beautiful traditions while also incorporating techniques from contemporary massage and bodywork.
Individual practitioners may work differently, so check their profile or ask reception if you’re specifically looking for an Ayurvedic-style treatment.
The Oils
Depending on your practitioner, warm oils may be incorporated into your treatment.
These can make the massage feel especially nurturing and help the practitioner’s hands move smoothly across the scalp and hair.
Essential oils may also be used where appropriate.
If you have:
- Sensitive skin
- Allergies
- Fragrance sensitivity
- Scalp conditions
- Particular product preferences
please tell your practitioner before treatment.
And an important logistical note:
If oil is being used through the scalp, you may leave looking extremely relaxed and slightly less ready for a board meeting.
Plan accordingly.
Does Head Massage Improve Circulation?
Massage temporarily increases local blood flow in the tissues being worked.
This is one reason the scalp and skin may feel warm during or after treatment.
We’re happy to describe that straightforwardly.
We don’t need to upgrade it into:
“Your hair follicles are now receiving an unprecedented shipment of nutrients.”
Your body is more complicated than that.
Can Scalp Massage Help Hair Growth?
This is one of those claims that has travelled much further than the research.
There has been a small study suggesting scalp massage may influence hair thickness, but the evidence is nowhere near strong enough for us to recommend head massage as a treatment for hair loss.
So please don’t cancel your dermatologist appointment and start aggressively rubbing your scalp.
Book this treatment because scalp massage feels wonderful.
Any hair-related miracles are not included in the fee.
Does Neck and Head Massage Nourish the Hair?
Massage and oil can make the hair and scalp feel conditioned, particularly if a nourishing oil is used.
Some people love how their hair feels afterwards.
Others look immediately at their beautifully oiled hair and think:
Well. I’m not going anywhere tonight.
Both responses are legitimate.
We wouldn’t claim massage repairs damaged hair follicles, prevents sun damage or treats hair loss.
Those are different problems.
Can It Help Dandruff or Scalp Psoriasis?
Massage is not a treatment for psoriasis or persistent scalp conditions.
And active inflammation, broken skin or irritated areas may actually mean massage or particular oils should be avoided.
If you have psoriasis, eczema, significant dandruff, sores, unexplained hair loss or another ongoing scalp problem, appropriate medical or dermatological assessment is worthwhile.
Tell your practitioner about existing scalp conditions before treatment so they can adapt the session.
Does Head Massage Remove Toxins?
No need.
Your liver, kidneys, lungs, digestive system and other physiological processes are already working extraordinarily hard on that project.
Massage doesn’t need a detox story to justify itself.
Head massage can feel blissful.
It can work with tense muscles.
It can create warmth.
It can help you slow down.
Those are perfectly good reasons to book.
What About the Lymphatic System?
The scalp, face and neck contain lymphatic vessels and lymph nodes, just like other parts of the body.
Gentle touch can influence superficial fluid movement.
But this Neck and Head Massage is not the same treatment as Manual Lymphatic Drainage.
If you have diagnosed lymphoedema, significant swelling or a specific lymphatic concern, book with an appropriately trained Manual Lymphatic Drainage practitioner instead.

Face and Jaw Tension
The jaw, temples, scalp and neck have a habit of joining one another’s problems.
If you’re somebody who clenches when concentrating or wakes with a tight jaw, you may find work around the temples, scalp and neck particularly enjoyable.
If jaw pain or clenching is your main concern, however, our targeted Face and Jaw Massage allows more time to work specifically with those areas and can include intra-oral treatment where appropriate.

Can Head Massage Help Me Concentrate?
Maybe afterwards you’ll feel clearer simply because you’ve stopped thinking about seventeen things at once.
Many people describe feeling refreshed, quieter or mentally clearer after massage.
We’re perfectly happy to acknowledge that experience.
But we’re not going to promise that an hour of scalp massage turns you into an intellectual weapon.
You’ll still have to finish the spreadsheet yourself.
What Happens During Your Appointment?
Your practitioner will begin by asking what you’d like from the treatment.
Maybe:
- Your neck is tight
- Your scalp feels tense
- You’ve been stressed
- You want your shoulders worked on
- You adore strong scalp massage
- You want gentle pressure
- You’d like warm oils
- You absolutely do not want oil anywhere near your hair
- You simply want to switch off
All useful information.
Your practitioner will then tailor the session around your preferences and their style of treatment.
Will My Hair Get Oily?
If oil is used on the scalp:
Yes.
Almost certainly.
We prefer honesty.
If you don’t want oil in your hair, tell your practitioner before treatment and they can adapt the session.
If you do want the full warm-oil experience, we recommend not scheduling your professional headshot immediately afterwards.
Do I Have to Undress?
That depends on how much of the neck, shoulders and upper back is being treated.
Your practitioner will explain what they recommend.
You undress only to your level of comfort and professional draping is used throughout.
If you prefer to remain more covered, tell your practitioner and they can adapt the treatment.
Is the Pressure Strong?
It can be adapted.
Some people love firm scalp massage.
Some prefer slow, gentle pressure.
Your neck and shoulder work can also range from light to firmer depending on your preference.
The goal is not to prove how much pressure you can tolerate.
It’s to make the treatment feel fabulous.
Your Comfort and Consent
As with every treatment at The Urban Alchemist, you’re in charge of your body.
You can:
- Ask for more or less pressure
- Decline oils or essential oils
- Ask for an area to be avoided
- Request that your face isn’t touched
- Keep additional clothing on
- Ask questions
- Stop treatment at any time
And please don’t endure something quietly because you think you’re being polite.
Your therapist would much rather know.
Neck and Head Massage vs Face and Jaw Massage
There is some overlap, but the intention is different.
Neck and Head Massage is primarily a deeply relaxing scalp, head, neck and shoulder treatment.
Face and Jaw Massage is more specifically focused on jaw muscles, clenching, facial tension and TMJ-related symptoms and may include intra-oral treatment.

If your thought is:
My jaw hurts.
Choose Face and Jaw.
If your thought is:
Someone please rub my head until I forget my own postcode.
You’re exactly where you need to be.
Neck and Head Massage vs Remedial Massage
Remedial Massage is generally more appropriate when you’re seeking treatment for a specific area of muscular pain or dysfunction.

Neck and Head Massage is much more relaxation-led.
It can certainly work with muscular tension.
But the central experience is:
Ahhhhhhhhhh.
Frequently Asked Questions About Neck and Head Massage
Is head massage good for stress?
Many people find scalp, head and neck massage deeply relaxing, particularly when they’re feeling stressed or mentally overloaded.
Massage doesn’t remove the cause of stress, but it can provide a valuable period of physical rest and settling.
Can head massage help headaches?
It may feel helpful when muscular tension around the neck, scalp or temples forms part of the headache picture.
Not every headache is muscular, however, and recurrent or changing headaches deserve appropriate assessment.

Can neck massage help neck pain?
Some people find massage helpful for muscular neck tension, but persistent neck pain may have a range of contributors.
If pain is the main reason you’re booking, Myotherapy, Remedial Massage or Chiropractic may be a more suitable service.

Does scalp massage grow hair?
There isn’t strong evidence to recommend scalp massage as a treatment for hair loss.
If you’re experiencing unexplained or significant hair loss, speak with an appropriate healthcare professional.
Does scalp massage help dandruff?
Massage doesn’t treat the underlying causes of dandruff or other scalp disorders.
If you have an irritated or inflamed scalp, let your practitioner know before treatment.
Does this massage use oil?
It may.
Some practitioners use warm oils or essential oils as part of the treatment.
Check the practitioner description when booking or call reception on (03) 9347 9247 if you have a strong preference.
Can I have the treatment without oil in my hair?
Yes.
Tell your practitioner before treatment and they can adjust their technique.
Is it an Indian or Ayurvedic head massage?
Some of our practitioners may draw inspiration from Ayurvedic head massage traditions, alongside other massage and bodywork techniques.
The exact style depends on your practitioner.
Is the massage only on my head?
No.
Treatment generally includes the neck and shoulders and may also include the upper back, face or other relevant areas depending on your practitioner and preferences.
Will I fall asleep?
Quite possibly.
There is something about scalp massage that seems to make consciousness feel terribly optional.
What should I do after my massage?
Nothing particularly complicated.
Drink according to thirst, move normally and enjoy feeling relaxed.
If oils have been used through your hair, your most pressing post-treatment decision may simply be whether washing it feels worth ruining the vibe.
