Reiki

Reiki in Carlton North, Melbourne

Gentle Hands. Quiet Space. Absolutely Nothing You Need to Achieve.

Sometimes what you want is not another conversation.

Not another thing to work on.

Not another strategy.

Not somebody asking you to optimise your sleep, regulate your nervous system, examine your childhood or finally start meal prepping on Sundays.

Sometimes you would simply like to lie down.

Reiki is a gentle complementary energy-healing practice in which the practitioner places their hands lightly on, or just above, different areas of your body.

Sessions are usually quiet, non-invasive and deeply restful.

Within the traditional Reiki framework, practitioners understand the practice as working with universal life energy.

You might understand it spiritually.

Energetically.

Symbolically.

Or simply as an hour where somebody creates a very calm space and you are required to do almost nothing.

All are welcome.

What Is Reiki?

Reiki is a Japanese complementary practice developed in the early twentieth century.

The word is commonly translated from the Japanese terms rei, referring to universal or spiritual, and ki, referring to life energy.

Reiki belongs to a broader family of practices often described as Energy Healing.

Explore Energy Healing

During a traditional Reiki session, the practitioner works with the idea that universal life energy can be channelled through their hands.

This is a spiritual and energetic framework rather than an established biomedical mechanism.

Science has not demonstrated the existence of the particular energy field proposed in Reiki traditions.

That doesn’t mean you need to become embarrassed about enjoying Reiki.

It just means we distinguish between:

This is how Reiki understands what is happening

and

This has been scientifically proven to happen.

Both spirituality and intellectual honesty are allowed in the same treatment room.

What Happens During a Reiki Session?

You’ll usually begin with a brief conversation with your practitioner.

You may want to talk about:

  • How you’ve been feeling
  • What brings you in
  • Whether you have a particular intention
  • Anything you would like the practitioner to know
  • Whether you’re comfortable with light touch
  • Whether you’d prefer the practitioner’s hands to remain above the body

Then you lie down fully clothed.

And this is where your responsibilities become extremely manageable.

You rest.

Your practitioner will generally work through a series of hand positions, either lightly touching the body or holding their hands just above it.

The session may be mostly quiet.

There is no particular emotional, energetic or spiritual experience you are required to have.

What Does Reiki Feel Like?

People describe Reiki sessions very differently.

You might notice:

  • Warmth
  • Coolness
  • Tingling
  • Heaviness
  • Lightness
  • Relaxation
  • Sleepiness
  • Emotional responses
  • A sense of calm
  • A feeling of spaciousness
  • Nothing particularly unusual

Some people fall asleep.

Some notice physical sensations.

Some have imagery or thoughts arise.

Some spend forty-five minutes pleasantly hovering in the strange territory between awake and asleep.

And some feel basically nothing except:

Well, that was lovely.

There is no correct Reiki experience.

Do I Need to Feel Energy for Reiki to Work?

No.

You don’t need to feel heat coming from the practitioner’s hands.

You don’t need tingling.

You don’t need visions.

You don’t need to see colours.

Your crown chakra does not need to dramatically burst open at 3:42pm.

You can simply rest.

People’s subjective experiences during Reiki differ enormously.

We wouldn’t use the presence or absence of unusual sensations as proof that something has or hasn’t happened.

How Does Reiki Work?

This depends on the framework you’re using.

The Traditional Reiki Perspective

Within Reiki traditions, practitioners understand themselves as working with or facilitating universal life energy.

The practitioner may describe Reiki as supporting balance, flow or harmony within the person’s energetic system.

For people who connect with this spiritual framework, that may be an important part of the experience.

The Scientific Perspective

There is currently no established scientific evidence for a measurable universal life-energy field being transferred through a Reiki practitioner’s hands.

Research has explored Reiki for symptoms such as pain, anxiety and wellbeing, but results have not established it as a treatment for specific medical conditions.

So we don’t claim that Reiki removes disease, corrects physiological dysfunction or repairs an objectively measurable energetic blockage.

It can still exist as a complementary, spiritual and restorative practice without doing any of those things.

Is Reiki Evidence-Based?

Reiki has been studied, but the research base remains limited and inconsistent.

There is not strong enough evidence to claim that Reiki treats or cures health conditions.

People may nevertheless experience Reiki as:

  • Relaxing
  • Comforting
  • Reflective
  • Spiritually meaningful
  • Emotionally supportive
  • Restorative

Those experiences don’t need to be inflated into medical claims.

Sometimes feeling deeply cared for and quiet for an hour is enough.

Reiki for Relaxation

This is one of Reiki’s great charms.

There isn’t much to do.

You don’t need to stretch.

Talk continuously.

Remember a sequence.

Perform a breathing technique correctly.

Or emerge transformed into a permanently serene human being.

You lie down.

The room is quiet.

Someone works gently around you.

For people whose ordinary lives involve a great deal of thinking, doing, caring, organising or being needed, that can feel surprisingly luxurious.

Reiki and Stress

Stress can make it difficult to stop.

Even when your body is tired, your mind may remain extremely committed to:

Planning.

Rehearsing.

Reviewing.

Solving.

Remembering.

Preparing for events that may never happen.

And revisiting a conversation from last Thursday that really did not deserve this much attention.

Some people find the quiet structure of a Reiki session helps them settle and rest.

That is different from saying Reiki has been proven to treat an anxiety disorder or regulate a particular biological system.

If stress or anxiety is persistent, severe or significantly affecting your life, appropriate psychological or medical care may also be important.

Reiki and Emotional Wellbeing

Reiki sessions can sometimes feel emotional.

You may notice sadness.

Relief.

Grief.

Tenderness.

Calm.

Or absolutely nothing remotely dramatic.

You do not need to cry.

There is no energetic purge requirement.

If emotion arises, you’re welcome to let it be there.

We don’t assume that emotional intensity proves deeper healing has occurred.

Sometimes a quiet session simply gives you enough space to notice how you’ve actually been feeling.

Reiki During Life Transitions

There are times when people are drawn to practices that feel less analytical.

Grief.

Relationship changes.

Career changes.

Parenthood.

Ageing.

Illness.

Moving.

Spiritual questioning.

Identity shifts.

Beginnings.

Endings.

The strange bit in between where the previous version of life has finished but the next one hasn’t properly introduced itself yet.

Reiki may provide a quiet, supportive ritual during those periods.

It does not need to provide answers.

Sometimes accompaniment is enough.

Reiki and Spirituality

Reiki has an explicitly spiritual history, although it is not generally practised as a religion.

People approach it from many different perspectives.

You may understand Reiki through concepts such as:

  • Universal energy
  • Spiritual connection
  • Life force
  • Intuition
  • Presence
  • Intention

You may also think:

I don’t know what I believe. I just really like Reiki.

Excellent.

You don’t need to resolve the metaphysics before booking.

Do I Need to Believe in Reiki?

No.

You may be completely comfortable with energy-healing language.

You may be curious but uncertain.

You may be deeply sceptical about the mechanism and still enjoy the treatment.

A practitioner should not require you to adopt their worldview.

You can experience the session and make your own meaning from it.

Reiki and Energy Healing

Reiki is one particular form of Energy Healing.

Energy Healing is the broader umbrella and may include many different traditions, techniques and practitioner styles.

A Reiki session generally follows a relatively gentle, quiet approach involving hands lightly on or above the body.

Other Energy Healing sessions may incorporate:

  • Sound
  • Meditation
  • Movement
  • Breathwork
  • Intuitive guidance
  • Ceremonial practices
  • Conversation
  • Other spiritual or energetic frameworks

Is Reiki Massage?

No.

Reiki does not involve the kneading, pressure, stretching or manipulation associated with massage.

You remain fully clothed.

The practitioner’s hands may rest lightly on particular areas, or remain just above the body.

If what your shoulders are actually requesting is:

Please have somebody get in there and do something about this situation immediately

you may prefer a massage.

Reiki is considerably less bossy.

Can Reiki Treat Pain?

We wouldn’t present Reiki as a treatment for pain.

Some people living with pain may find a Reiki session relaxing or comforting, but unexplained, persistent or significant pain deserves appropriate clinical assessment.

Reiki should not delay medical care or replace treatments that are needed.

You are very welcome to enjoy Reiki alongside conventional healthcare.

Can Reiki Treat Anxiety or Depression?

Reiki isn’t a replacement for mental health treatment.

Some people experience sessions as relaxing or emotionally supportive.

But anxiety disorders, depression, trauma symptoms, panic, OCD and other significant mental health concerns require appropriately qualified care.

Reiki can be something you choose alongside that care if you find it helpful.

Can Reiki Heal Illness?

There isn’t good evidence that Reiki cures disease.

We wouldn’t tell someone to use Reiki instead of medication, medical investigation, surgery, psychological treatment or another necessary form of healthcare.

Reiki gets to be Reiki.

It does not need to become medicine in order to have a place here.

Can Reiki Remove “Blocked Energy”?

Energy blockages are part of the spiritual language used by some Reiki and Energy Healing practitioners.

They are not established medical findings that can be objectively diagnosed or measured.

If this framework is meaningful to you, you’re welcome to explore it.

We simply wouldn’t suggest that unexplained physical or psychological symptoms prove that you have blocked energy.

Sometimes a headache needs rest.

Sometimes it needs water.

Sometimes it needs a doctor.

Sometimes you’d still quite like Reiki afterwards.

All possible.

Is Reiki Hands-On?

It can be.

Some practitioners use very gentle touch.

Others hold their hands just above the body.

Your preferences should be discussed before or during the session.

You can always request hands-off treatment.

You can also change your mind.

Consent During Reiki

Reiki may be gentle, but ordinary rules about consent still apply.

You can:

  • Ask where the practitioner intends to place their hands
  • Request hands-off work
  • Decline touch in particular areas
  • Change position
  • Ask questions
  • Ask to stop
  • Change your mind

The fact that something is described as energetic or spiritual does not remove the need for clear boundaries.

What Should I Wear to Reiki?

Something comfortable.

You generally remain fully clothed throughout a Reiki session.

There is no need for special clothing.

This is not the occasion to finally purchase ceremonial linen trousers unless you particularly want to.

What Should I Do After Reiki?

Whatever feels sensible.

You may feel relaxed or sleepy afterwards, so give yourself a little time before launching directly back into a stressful afternoon if you can.

Have some water.

Eat if you’re hungry.

Notice how you feel.

You don’t need to follow an elaborate detox protocol.

Your body is already equipped with organs for that particular administrative task.

How Many Reiki Sessions Will I Need?

There isn’t one required number.

Some people have Reiki once.

Some book periodically when they’re feeling depleted or want quiet time.

Others include it in an ongoing spiritual or wellbeing practice.

You can decide based on your own experience.

No Reiki practitioner needs to enrol you in an indefinite energetic maintenance contract.

Come once.

See how you feel.

Return if you’d like to.
