Dr Firas Al‑Ali, Holistic GP

Dr Firas Al‑Ali, Holistic Medicine GP at The Urban AlchemistDr Firas Al-Ali is a GP by training for around 30 years now, a graduate of the Royal Australian College for general practitioners (RACGP). His personal health challenges led him down the path of alternative medicine, which inspired him to complete his fellowship degree with the Australian College of Nutritional and environmental Medicine (ACNEM). Dr Al-Ali has also completed advanced studies with the Kalish Institute of Functional Medicine (USA). Currently he is undertaking studies in longevity using integrative and functional medicine.

Dr Al-Ali acknowledges and directly addresses the physical health of patients, inclusive of diet, lifestyle, functional testing, hormones, supplements, vitamins etc. He also considers factors beyond the physical – for example, emotions trapped in different parts of the body and organs, leading certain patterns of disease and illness. Body, mind and soul is addressed in every consultation using many different approaches.

Dr Al-Ali works beyond simply prescribing; he listens deeply, addressing childhood traumas, mental health patterns, and the ways these shape our health. One of his many tools is Medicinal Cannabis and he collaborates thoughtfully with complementary and allied practitioners where beneficial.

His main working vision and contract with the patient is to empower the patient to be self-sufficient. His intention is to enable the patient to become independent of extraneous sources of health support, and to trust the innate wisdom of the body.

He believes that whole-body health requires proper function of both cortisol and gut health, and he offers root medicine for the two. Ultimately, by working on these two specific areas, the aim is to reset the patient’s metabolic pathways so that the person may become self-sufficient, needing no supplements or intervention. The only maintenance needed is diet and lifestyle changes.

Dr Al-Ali’s approach to functional medicine, in a nutshell, is to test the state of the whole body using cutting-edge investigations, for example OMX or Organic Acid testing. These will test your fat, carbs, protein and mitochondrial metabolic pathways. They will also test for various vitamins, amino acids, dopamine, serotonin, adrenalin and noradrenaline (sympathetic/stress/fight/flight/freeze), liver function, microbiome metabolites, gut fungal (candida) metabolites etc. The tests Dr Al-Ali prefers will also measure hormone levels, cortisol, progesterone, oestrogen, testosterone and adrenal fatigue pathways.

If we can know and restore the function of one cell, then we can restore the function of the whole body.

In terms of correction, changing diet and lifestyle may change your microbiome in just three days. Addressing leaky gut and health of the gut/brain axis is crucial, and can be done by restoring the balance of your microbiome and eliminating any pathogen infections – including candida – from your gut. Eventually, this process will lead to a revolution in the way the patient feels and thinks, all leading to new life, more aligned with whom you desire to be.
