What is Sound Healing?
Sound healing is akin to a vibrational massage (or bath) that can bypass any resistance (of the mind), alter your brain waves (to access a more relaxed state) and have a positive affect your organs and nervous system.
Sound healing can elicit very different responses from individuals depending on what is going on in their lives, minds and bodies at the time. Personally, we’ve experienced: full visual journeys, emotional releases, muscle relaxation, a sense of expansion, ‘tingling’ sensations, increased feelings of love and euphoria, improved sleep, and probably more that is happening at such a deep level that our minds are unaware of it!
Sometimes you can feel energised after a sound healing, other times you can feel sleepy. This is your body’s way of integrating and is dependent on your state of being prior to the session and what has shifted as a result of the experience.
Origins of Sound Healing
The origin of sound healing is found in nature itself, our eternal inspiration. Think of rainfall, thunder, wind in the trees, waves breaking, bird song, crickets or cicadas, frog songs, etc. There is nothing quite like being fully present to these soundscapes!
Human beings have been using sound and song since, well forever. Dancing, drumming/keeping a beat, singing around a fire for the purpose of storytelling, celebration, connection, ceremony and ritual is an ancient, pan-cultural practice. If you’ve never experienced this, we strongly recommend it!
There is evidence that Tibetan singing bowls date back to the lifetime of Buddha (560-480 B.C.), but they may in fact originate from the shamanistic “Bon” religion, predating Tibetan Buddhism by centuries!
There is conclusive evidence that shamanistic cultures, which use drumming and chanting to induce trance states conducive to healing, have been around for 10,000 years, however other evidence suggests shamanism may date back some 30,000 years!
What ‘The Science’ Says
According to Dr. Mitchell Gaynor, therapeutic sound affects our bodies on a cellular and sub-cellular level. “You can look at disease as a form of disharmony. And there’s no organ system in the body that’s not affected by sound and music and vibration.”
Air and bone conduction through sound vibrations can stimulate the vagus nerve and related cranial nerves indicating that it is possible for sound healing to help regulate the autonomic nervous system. This can help with decreasing anxiety or improving sleep, digestion and social engagement.
A 2016 study assessed the effects of sound healing on sixty-two women and men and found significant differences between their reported emotional state pre and post healing. All participants noted a reduction in feelings of tension, anger, fatigue and depressed mood!
The resonate sounds created by the ancient Tibetan singing bowls and other sound healing tools when placed near and on the body produce a range of frequencies that affect not only our auditory and vestibular systems, but our brain wave patterns. This can profoundly affect our physical and emotional health. As the mind, body, and emotions are able to integrate, self-healing becomes possible. Whether this healing be physical, emotional or psychological, sound therapy induces a profound sense of wellbeing and a connection to your own inner wisdom.
What to Expect in a Sound Healing
To begin you’ll be asked what your intention is for the sound healing. This can be a general or very specific intention. This is for your benefit – setting an intention is an act of conscious creation. You may also be invited to choose an oracle card for more insight.
You will then be asked to lie down on a very comfortable massage table and offered an eye pillow (this helps to quiet the mind, allowing you to journey deeper, with less mental resistance).
Our sound healer works intuitively using a variety of sound instruments including:
· Crystal Bowls
· Tibetan singing bowls
· Shamanic frame drum
· Tuning forks
· Ting Shas (the little ‘symbols’)
Crystals (laid on or around the body) or flower essences may also be used in your session.
You will always be asked before anything is placed on your body.
